Last month, 14 staff members from various levels and divisions within our Office attended a comprehensive training program conducted by SIA on IFRS and IPSAS.

The Samoa Institute of Accountants (SIA) organized two 5 day sessions over the course of two weeks. The first session was on the Practical Application of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), and the second was on the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS). The training was held locally at the National University of Samoa and taught by Mr. Jerad Dias, CA Australia.

SIA was established in 1959, and has since evolved into an esteemed institute with members spanning across both government and private sectors. Their service delivery is guided and performed in accordance with IFRS as well as International Standards on Auditing and Quality Assurance.

The IFRS are a set of accounting rules for the financial statements of public companies that are intended to make them consistent, transparent, and easily comparable around the world. These standards are issued by the International Accounting Standards Board.

In parallel, the IPSAS are a set of accounting standards issued by the IPSAS Board for use by public sector entities around the world in the preparation of financial statements. Notably, IPSAS are based on the IFRS.

The varied backgrounds and roles of the group of staff members who attended the trainings reflect the importance and value of these training programs to our Samoa Audit Office. Programs such as these reinforces our commitment to upholding international accounting standards and best practices, and enhancing the quality and effectiveness of our auditing processes.

We extend our gratitude and appreciation to the Samoa Institute of Accountants for this training opportunity, and Mr. Jerad Dias for his expertise.
